Over
the years St Mary's has produced a number of outstanding sportswomen
who have achieved at provincial and national levels.
St. Mary's approach to sport is
in line with the school's central belief that education is concerned with
the whole person and that every pupil has the capacity to achieve
something worthwhile. The main objective of the sports programme, therefore, is to identify and develop skills in every pupil because achievement in one area so often
proves to be the key to the will to succeed in school life as a whole.
Exposing the child to many disciplines will help her to participate confidently in sport, both
during her school career and thereafter. Choice and balance again, therefore, plays an important part in the school's sports
programme. This does not mean,
however that there is no direction.
All pupils are
expected to participate in an appropriate physical
activity. These activities are supervised by fully
qualified coaches under the Director of Sports.
Facilities for sports are
outstanding, with three sports fields, a swimming pool with diving facilities,
seven tennis
courts, netball and volleyball courts. The Sports Hall
(completed in
1992) has two squash courts and
caters for gymnastics, aerobics, indoor hockey, badminton and a number of indoor sports. |
