| Environmental Education: Each year, girls in Grades 8, 9
and 10
spend one week on "Environmentals"
- a carefully-planned programme which introduces students to our
environment; from CBD to the bush; from impoverished communities
to the seats of power. In addition, there are many
subject-specific and cultural outings, as well as holiday visits
both within South Africa and overseas.
Enterprise Education at St. Mary’s begins in Grade 1 and finishes in Grade 12. Throughout the school we have developed various exercises and activities to enhance skills that will produce
enterprising individuals in subjects such as Economics and Management Science
(EMS) and Life Orientation (LO) which are in line with the new curriculum.
Financial literacy is
an area which is growing.
The enterprise team has become aware of the importance of educating our girls in this
direction because of changes in the job market re contracts, retirement planning,
investments and medical aid. It is imperative that pupils are financially literate
when they enter the job market.
The "Dare To" programme, which
operates over three days at the end of each year also introduces
students to a wide range of fascinating activities.
Young people usually find the activities
programme an enjoyable process of self-discovery. Hidden skills
and aptitudes often come to light and many people gain a real
sense of achievement from success in unexpected areas. It is
also great fun and an excellent way to make friends!
