Then and Now...History of St Mary's 1906 - 2006

Old Girls' News
1941 Elvor Shaw (Hudson) last wrote in October from New Zealand. She was recovering from chemotherapy after a rare form of cancer and was hoping to still be able to travel to Australia in November as she had won a free trip. We do hope that it was possible Elvor.
1944 Doris Austin (Leslie) attended St Mary’s from 1938 until 1944, which is the year she matriculated. She then taught Botany and Geography at St Mary’s from 1949 until 1951. In 1952 she took a post at Durban Girls’ College and emigrated to Rhodesia in 1953. She has recently moved back to Gillitts, more than 50 years later. She can be contacted on 031-7673255 or 076 1689708.
1949 Jill Tyler (Bagnall-Wild) is now living in Suffolk in the United Kingdom. Her father was an Army Officer serving in Egypt and in 1941 when she was 8 years old they were evacuated to Durban. Her mother along with Vivian and Sheila Thompson and Rosemary and Diana Lucas’ mothers moved to Kloof and towards the end of the year they came to St. Mary’s. Special memories for Jill are of being confirmed in the Chapel by Bishop Fisher when she was 10 and of being a member of the Brownie pack when Lady Baden-Powell visited. Jill still has her toy lion which sat on the top of the arch they built for Lady Baden-Powell to go into their “camp”. In January 1945 they left South Africa to return to England. Later in 1948, they went back to Egypt and Jill met her husband, also an Army Officer and they have been married now for fifty-four years. They have four children and nine grandchildren. While in Kloof, Jill learnt to ride a pony and she still rides her latest little Irish cob 3 or 4 times a week.
1959 Alison Poortenaar (Laing) and her husband were lucky enough to be able to get back into farming, dairying for 14 years and now beef. They live in a beautiful part of the world in Tasmania. Their children are divided between Melbourne and Hobart and they have 5 delightful grandchildren. Farming is easier than in the Natal Midlands but much more hands on so Alison is very involved in it all. Besides that she runs an internet centre, does bookkeeping, gardening and is very keen on genealogy. Her email address is poorties@bigpond.com
1960 Leonie Anderson (Hipkin) has lived in Australia since 1966. She married an Australian, Peter, whom she met in London in 1964. Very sadly Peter died 2 years ago. Leonie has 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren. In 2004 she went to Tasmania and stayed with Alison Poortenaar (Laing) and her husband Barend on their beautiful farm and a few years ago Mary Lotter (Garrard) visited her in Sydney on her way from Zimbabwe to see family in New Zealand. Intermittently Leonie keeps in touch with Pam Irish, Jill Jones, Penny Rabinowitz and her oldest St Mary’s friend Gill Gale Brown (Hulett) who left in Standard 5 and was her bridesmaid in 1965. Gill is living in London. In 2004 Leonie went on tour with her church choir to celebrate their centenary. They sang in Lincoln Cathedral, Yorkminster Cathedral, Winchester Cathedral and St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Leonie is hoping to be in South Africa in August this year.

1989 Robyn Capps (Maclaine) After matriculating in 1989 Robyn spent a fabulous year in California as a rotary exchange student. She then moved to England in 1999 where she joined Pricewaterhouse Coopers in London working in Transaction Services, (eg. mergers and acquisitions). Her move into the private sector was to a Biotech plc, where she worked in business planning and strategy. She married Duncan, a British Army Officer, in 2000 at the St Mary’s Chapel. They have two daughters, Lara (2) and Geena (7 months). Duncan’s profession keeps them moving – they have just returned to the UK after a two year posting in Sydney Australia and they are due to go to Germany in 2007. She is fortunate in that her husband loves South Africa and they manage to get back to visit friends and family fairly often.

1998 Tarryn Sawyer (niece of Amanda 1971) completed a PC Engineering course at Varsity College in Durban and then passed her MCSE exams. She then worked at Imperial Bank in Johannesburg and then Nedcor. The closest Tarryn ever got to participating in the school gala was sitting on the bench supporting her house. She came home one day and expressed an interest in deep sea diving. Here she showed a different side to her character and not only completed the course, but also did her advanced divers course. At school her peers visualized Tarryn ending up working as a beautician and sitting quietly in a corner painting old ladies’ fingernails. Nothing could be further from the mark. For Tarryn it was from 30 metres under the sea to 9000 metres above Mother Earth. After a casual micro light flight at Zinkwazi Beach, the flying bug bit and Tarryn presented herself to Lanseria airport to begin flying lessons. She was persuaded to apply to South African Airways to join their cadet program. She applied along with about 2500 other hopefuls and after rigorous tests spanning 9 months was eventually one of 12 chosen to enrol. Tarryn completed her Private Pilots Licence, Commercial Pilots License and the theory for her Airline Transport Pilots License. At the Graduation she won 2 of the 3 prizes awarded namely: 43 Air School Trophy for best flying performance and the CEO Trophy for the best overall performance by a cadet during the course.
