The Music department plays an important part in the academic, social and spiritual life of the school and, significantly, in maintaining St. Mary's reputation for excellence.

Private tuition is offered in a wide range of orchestral instruments, as well as in voice training and keyboard instruments.
There are school choirs catering for different age groups and singing styles; two orchestras, the
African Music Ensemble and a gospel group. Regular student recitals are held and girls are prepared for a very wide range of examinations. They also perform regularly at festivals within and beyond South Africa.
We have a number of outstanding musicians contributing to the KwaZulu-Natal Youth Orchestra, Wind Band and Choir. The Chamber Choir has toured extensively in South Africa and to Vienna, Russia and the United Kingdom.
