Geography is an excellent ‘base’ subject, as the content and skills equip pupils to face challenges in a variety of fields. Evidence of its character as a unique bridging subject can be seen in the fact that at University, Geography can be taken as a major subject in Bachelor of Arts, Science and Social Science degrees.

Environmental Management – Environmental geographers have the background, specialist knowledge and skills, and the broad environmental overview which makes them ideal for positions in environmental management. |

Urban and Regional Planning – Human geography provides the theoretical tools and research skills for understanding and implementing strategies to change in the social, economic, political and natural environments. |

Education – Opportunities in education exist in schools, universities, technical colleges, research and social organisations, as well as G.I.S. and related fields. |

Travel Agent – plan travel itineraries, highlight unique sights of different regions and alert travellers to potential dangers while travelling to different locations. They may specialise in foreign or domestic travel, individual or group travel or a specific geographic region. |

Cartography – This involves the creation and design of maps. The following career fields deal with cartography:
Surveyors: provide accurate maps of construction features such as buildings, roads and bridges. They establish official land, air and space boundaries. They also write descriptions for land deeds and other legal documents.
Graphic Information System Specialist: The Graphic Information System is a computer system that stores and analyses map information. Specialists are experts at this system and interpret this information and provide direction for future planning. |

Weather Forecast – study, predict and report local weather conditions as well as conditions across the country based on information about air pressure, temperature, humidity and wind velocity. They monitor and record data from various measurement devices such as thermometers, barometers and hygrometers. |
