"Service Before Self, God Before All"

In line with the school's motto, students are encouraged not merely to think about others, but to translate their concern into action. This is achieved through various fund raising activities to support charities and especially through a large number of community projects.

The High School has just had its annual food collection for the SPCA and the response was very pleasing. The bus was packed full of food and the SPCA was most grateful for this much needed contribution.  Pictured below are some of the girls in front of the bus before leaving.

SMILE: St Mary's Interactive Learning Experience

S.M.I.L.E. is a national NGO and PBO. S.M.I.L.E.’s key focus is improvement in the quality of teaching and learning in English First Additional Language from Grades 4-12 - as the core foundation for improved proficiency in all Learning Areas.

  • S.M.I.L.E. provides Teacher Training and Support in Primary and High Schools – enabling teachers and learners to meet the outcomes and assessment standards of the NCS.

  • S.M.I.L.E. develops, publishes and distributes English – First Additional Language Learning and Teaching Support Materials for daily English lessons from Grades 4-11.

S.M.I.L.E.’s 2 complementary Programmes which take place in Primary and High Schools are:

  • English Oral Conversation Skills Programme – a weekly afternoon extra curricular Programme.

  • Classroom Teacher Training and Support Programme – a daily formal classroom Programme.

The English Oral Conversation Skills Programme was initiated at St Mary’s in 1991, and has taken place weekly for the past 17 years.

St Mary’s Senior learners act as group leaders, on a voluntary basis, assisting Community Primary School learners to speak, read and write English in a stress free and stimulating environment. The key outcomes of the English Oral Conversation Skills Programme are:

  • to develop the English – First Additional Language skills of Community Grades 4 and 5 learners.

  • to develop the leadership and interpersonal skills of Grade 10 / 11 learners.

  • to provide a Training Venue for Community Primary and High School teachers, to acquire the necessary facilitation and management skills in order to conduct the Programme at their own schools.

  • to provide an on site, ready made Curriculum compliant Community Service Programme for St Mary’s Grades 10-12 learners.

  • to meet the Life Orientation Certificate Requirements in the areas of Life Coaching, Leadership and Community Service Participation.

S.M.I.L.E.’s English – First Additional Language Programmes provide nurturing and motivation for teachers and learners, through skills based Workshops, ‘hands on’ practical demonstration lessons and monitoring and observation to ensure skills are acquired and applied. In this way capacity building and valuable partnerships pave the way for sustaining quality teaching and learning in Community schools.
