Deaths
Our deepest sympathy to the following families:
+ 1936 Joy Watson nee Morling
Joy passed away peacefully in Scotland on 28 October 2005. Joy’s late sister Merle was also at St Mary’s. Joy’s granddaughter Roxane Watson matriculated at St Mary’s in 2004.

1953 Diana Schurtenberger nee Uys.
Diana was the only daughter of the late Doreen Uys who taught Std 1at St Mary’s from the late forties to the early sixties. Diana had a successful career in a senior capacity with British Airways. She married Rene Schurtenberger of Austrian Airlines. She passed away on 4 May 2005 in Berkshire, United Kingdom.

1965 Liz Marcel nee Bruce-Brown (1948-2004)
After Matriculating at St Mary’s in 1965, Liz attended the University of Natal (Durban) where she graduated with a BA (Speech & Drama). She worked successfully in journalism for several years including a stint in New York (74/75) as a reporter for the Argus Group on the Entertainments page.
She met Brian Marcel while working in Cape Town and they married in Johannesburg in 1976. They moved to the UK where she joined the Sunday Telegraph Newspaper. There she worked for Sir Peregrine Worsthorne for a short while. She left the Telegraph to help Brian set up a barcoding business (Bar Code System). Liz threw herself into the business, became an authority on barcodes and ran the business, while Brian travelled and expanded the business, primarily into Eastern Europe.
After seeing a program on television about the terrible conditions in orphanages in Romania after the shooting of President Ceausescu and his wife, Liz decided to adopt a child from Romania. Supported by Brian and after lengthy negotiations, Jessica was brought to the UK and adopted in 1990.
Liz’s very brave battle began in 1995 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She went into remission following chemotherapy and had even gone back to work at Bar Code Systems when cancer resumed in the form of an inoperable tumour on her sternum soon after visiting St Mary’s in 2000 for a 35th anniversary reunion - this she helped to organise. Liz worked relentlessly and pursued in excess of 30 different treatments, but still, cancer spread to her liver in 2002. She fought bravely on for another 2 years pursuing more cures but lost the battle and passed away peacefully at home on 11 September 2004. She is survived by her husband Brian, daughter Jessica (now 14) and sister Sandy Filmer (1962) who lives in the US. Liz was much loved and is sorely missed by her family and a great many friends. Testament to this was the wonderful service held to celebrate her life, which was attended by at least 200 people.

1981 Lisa Jarman nee Methven
Lisa passed away in Hawaii in December 2005 after a long illness.
A school friend sent in the following :
Lisa, my dear darling friend Who knows where we were heading. Who knows why we were there all those years ago. We were young, carefree and eager. Eager to embrace what lay ahead. The future – our future. It was a second, a moment frozen in time and then we went our separate ways. The years passed and time flew by. Our promises to be at each other’s weddings never materialised – to share in the birth of our children – never happened. And soon 18 years were gone We both faced our fortieth birthdays. I saw you again a month after your 40th. The day I heard her voice on the phone – the years melted away. And we were young girls again giggling, laughing and crying just a little.
I was blessed enough to spend three weeks with her a year ago. It was a special time – she was, I now realize, in the twilight of her life. Her spirit was preparing to leave her and her journey was nearly over. She still had so much to give – She had so much to say. She gave it and said it as only she could regardless and in spite of your objections. I got to know her daughter Kaila – her greatest joy. I got to know Tim, her husband and her greatest love. She loved them so much. They were the reason she endured. They were her life literally. She knew for the longest time that she was already on borrowed time. Her spirit was as vast as the Grand Canyon and will live on in those lives that she touched – the lives that were forever changed for having known her.
I salute my friend knowing that she is finally free.  For ever there will be a place in my heart – reserved for Kaila and Tim as I promised her there would always be.
I know that you are still with us Lisa – I hear your voice. I hear your laughter.
I see you running through fields of poppies or is it cosmos – it doesn’t matter – the flowers surround you, your arms outstretched and your heart open.
Be free my friend and thank you for blessing us with your indomitable spirit.
