St Mary’s Aquatic Centre

The new St Mary’s Aquatic Centre was opened on 18 September with much excitement and squeals from all who were brave enough to ‘break the ice’ in the polar bear dash.

Gracing the waters were Springbok swimmers and special guests of honour Kathryn Meaklim and Marielle Rogers. Both ladies are past St Mary’s pupils and it was a privilege for the school to invite them back as guests to address the girls and declare the pool open.

The Aquatic Centre consists of a 12-lane, 25 metre short course pool which will be utilised for swimming, water polo, synchronised swimming and in time, under-water hockey.

As part of the festivities both Primary and High school girls were invited to christen the pool by swimming one length. As it is also the school’s 101st birthday everyone was given birthday cake and a cup of hot chocolate and those that swam received a special ‘polar bear dash certificate’.

Leading the girls in the dash were the two springboks Kathryn and Marielle, whom, after cutting the ribbon dived in and did a two-length informal sprint.

To add to the carnival atmosphere, the African Music Ensemble group of drummers performed for everybody and two MC’s encouraged the girls in the different grades to ‘take the plunge’.

Those people that were instrumental in helping to make the pool a reality, were invited to share in the fun and were treated to a breakfast ‘al fresco’ at the poolside.
